McDonald's has taken down a Christmas advertisement produced using generative AI after receiving considerable criticism on social media.

The short spot was developed with the help of AI-generated video and was initially released on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Audience Reaction and Removal

Following its publication, audiences online lambasted the implementation of AI in the commercial. Many called it "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This incident serves as an key lesson as we investigate the proper utilization of generative technology," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was developed for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that often go badly during the Christmas break, with the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Commercials that include generative AI have become a increasing phenomenon among major companies, particularly for the holiday campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: As clips produced with generative AI are more likely to distort the more extended they are, most AI video outputs tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked concerns about automation in the production industry, with some critics stating it could negatively impact opportunities for camera crews.

Defense from the Production Company

Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

She stated, the production process took "seven weeks" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then crafted during the edit "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she commented. "The result was a film."

Divisive Public Reception

While the McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the reception for some AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas spot from another major brand reportedly received a 61% "positive feedback" from online commenters.

However, various brands have likewise encountered backlash for using the technique in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics called "lazy" and "uncanny".

The incident illustrates the continuing conversation within the marketing and production industries about the trade-off between technological innovation and creative integrity.
